Why we do what we do

 “We, the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union…” I memorized those words in elementary school, and they’ve stayed with me ever since. Always fascinated by how our government works I chose a career in public service even as I came to understand that “we the people” didn’t always include people who looked like me.

From the local level to the halls of Congress, I built a career crafting policy, communicating programs, and supporting efforts to ensure our government was responsive to and representiative of the people who make up our country. 

It wasn’t always easy. At times, it was frustrating, and often, heartbreaking. But through it all, I gained a deep respect for those who are committed not only to preserving our democracy, but to transforming it to make space, raise voices, and ensure representation for all the people.

We Are The People is the result of those years of experience. It’s rooted in the belief that leadership begins within, that impact doesn’t require a title, and that we are most powerful when we embrace who we are—free of “shoulds.” This work is my offering to support those who still believe in better, and who are finding their own way to lead, serve, and make change.

Maria Robles Meier (she/her/ella) is a social entrepreneur, storyteller and teacher who helps changemakers become more impactful. She founded We Are The People to create community, foster inclusion and offer professional training for those who impact public policy and programs. She is motivated by challenging the "shoulds" of life and supporting others along their leadership journey to do the same.

   Using story and narrative to help others create their vision, she is most impassioned about developing inclusive voices who impact policy and politics. 

   Previously, Maria had a career as a leadership staffer in Congress that included serving in senior positions for Democratic leadership offices in both the US House and Senate. Based on her experience, she was invited to testify before Congress on the importance of supporting and developing staff talent. 

   She has spoken to thousands on issues related to diversity, US politics, and public service, and her unique expertise has resulted in invitations to address Members of Parliament in the UK and Germany on the importance of building inclusive talent forces.  National Journal magazine named Maria to their list of the twenty most powerful staffers on Capitol Hill.  She has received recognition for her commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion, and Members of Congress commended her for “outstanding service to community and nation”.

   An award-winning writer, Maria is committed to infusing creativity in all she does and finding the magic in everyday life. 

We believe that the power to lead meaningful change belongs to those closest to the challenges. We Are The People exists to support an inclusive and reflective community of professionals impacting politics and policy at all levels. 

We support those whose voices have been overlooked as they lead with confidence, clarity, and purpose. 

We create space for growth, connection, and transformation through training, coaching, and community. In a world that often defines people by titles or proximity to power, we help leaders remember their impact begins within. Our work is rooted in the belief that leadership is not a position - it’s a practice. 

We believe that in the face of what seem like insurmountable challenges, when more of us rise, more of us are seen, heard, and empowered to shape what’s possible.
